Best Climbing Season for Mera Peak Climbing:
We do have two best seasons to climb to Mera Peak Climbing with us. We always suggest you to come at the right time of the year as far as possible to enjoy this trip at best weather condition.
Spring: - (March, April, May) - Spring is the best season to climb to Mera Peak. It has best weather condition, excellent visibility and good temperature. Spring is the best season to climb throughout the year.
Autumn: - (September, October, November) - Autumn is another best season to climb to Mera Peak. It has best weather condition, excellent visibility and good temperature. This season is best for climb below 7000m.
Winter Months: - (December, January and February)- Early Dec is good for climbing to Mera Peak but as it gets colder, you most be prepared for this. Also, fresh snow could make the climb much difficult. From mid Dec to Feb, it is winter month in Nepal so Himalayas has full snow fall thus we do not operate climbing at this period for safety reason.
Summer (June, July & August): - These are the monsoon months in Nepal and it often rains every day so rain and visibility can be an issue and trek/climb days will be hazy and wet. So typically this is not the right season to climb Mera Peak. However, early June still has good weather and visibility so Mera peak climb will be in operation till to mid of June (By then, the climb should be completed). We could also organize this climb at end of Aug, it is still safe and doable.
Acclimatization:
There is no way to prepare for altitude other than to spend time at altitude. Being in very good physical condition will help ameliorate some of the exhaustion that people often feel, but it will not prevent altitude caused medical problems such as Acute Mountain Sickness. This itinerary is designed with a high degree of awareness of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) in mind and to ensure a comfortable and safe adventure trek in the Himalayas. Staying well hydrated and getting plenty of rest may help. The maximum elevation of this trek will be reached at Mera summit at 6476m while on trek and 6189m during climbing to Mera Peak so it is important to go slow and acclimatize for safety in trek and climb days. We have specially designed our trek/climb itinerary with keeping maximum acclimatization days into the itinerary to make you acclimatize but ultimately your response at altitude is due to genetic factors.
Trekking/climbing above from 4000m, walking will be more difficult because of thin air and the drop-in oxygen levels and the humidity. At these heights, there is around 30%- 40% less oxygen than at sea level, so your body needs time to adapt these conditions and it is absolutely essential to have sufficient time for acclimatization. That’s why; in this given itinerary, all of these factors have been taken into consideration while design this itinerary to minimize the risk of AMS for your safety and success trekking with us.
What Happens To The Body During Altitude Illness?
- Your body tries to adapt to having less available oxygen by increasing the rate and depth of breathing, as well as the heart rate.
- Fluids accumulate in between the cells in the brain, the lungs or both, creating mild to severe symptoms.
- Mild symptoms include headache, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, insomnia and dizziness. These symptoms are usually resolved by spending one or two extra nights at the same altitude. If symptoms worsen, descent to lower altitudes is warranted.
- If you are resting at the same altitude and your symptoms worsen, then it is also necessary to descend.
- More serious symptoms of AMS include increased tiredness, severe headaches, vomiting, loss of coordination, shortness of breath and coughing fits.
- These extremely dangerous symptoms are called high altitude cerebral edema (or HACE). They can lead to unconsciousness and death within 12 hours.
- Increasing shortness of breath, cough and tiredness may also be signs of high altitude pulmonary edema or HAPE. This condition can rapidly prove to be fatal if ignored.
- Respiratory depression (the slowing down of breathing) can be caused by various substances, and may be a problem at altitude.
Following Substances Can Do This, And Should Never Be Used By Someone Who Has Symptoms Of Altitude Illness:
- Alcohol
- Sleeping pills (acetazolamide is the sleeping tablet of choice at altitude)
- Narcotic pain medications in more than modest doses
To prevent AMS and respiratory depression, drink at least three liters of liquid a day and avoid getting cold. Altitude sickness can a certain extent be prevented by acetazolamide (Diamox SR), 1000mg per day.
Some experts suggest a two-day trial of acetazolamide before the trip. Please seek the advice of your personal physician. Please note that taking Diamox SR does not mean that you can ignore advice about proper acclimatization.
To Recap, Serious Symptoms Of Altitude Sickness Include:
- A severe, enduring headache, which is not cured by ordinary painkillers
- Nausea and repeated vomiting
- Irritating dizziness or actual difficulty with balance and direction
- Visual disturbances with flickering vision and problems judging distance
- Pressure in the chest, rapid breathing and pulse rate, crackles in breathing and shortness of breath
- Swelling beneath the skin (edema), typically around the eyes
- Swollen ankles and hands
- Confusion
- Convulsions
In the presence of these symptoms, medical attention must be sought immediately in conjunction with descent to the lowest possible height.
Our guide/staff is very experienced in dealing with the effects of higher altitudes. As they are natives of Nepal, they easily acclimatize and therefore can care for their clients. They are equipped with necessary medical supplies and will assist with basic first aid treatment so they will treat you immediately in high altitude sickness issue for your safety in altitude.
Diamox (Acetazolamide)- Medicine For Altitude Sickness
Diamox (Acetazolamide) allows you to breathe faster so that you metabolize more oxygen, thereby minimizing the symptoms caused by poor oxygenation. This is especially helpful at night when respiratory drive is decreased. Since it takes a while for Diamox to have an effect, it is advisable to start taking it 24 hours before you go to altitude and continue for at least five days at higher altitude. The recommendation of the Himalayan Rescue Association Medical Clinic is 125 mg. twice a day (morning and night). (The standard dose was 250 mg., but their research showed no difference for most people with the lower dose, although some individuals may need 250 mg.) Possible side effects include tingling of the lips and finger- tips, blurring of vision, and alteration of taste. These side effects may be reduced with the 125-mg. doses. Side effects subside when the drug is stopped. Contact your physician for a prescription. Since Diamox is a sulfonamide drug, people who are allergic to sulfa drugs should not take Diamox. Diamox has also been known to cause severe allergic reactions to people with no previous history of Diamox or sulfa allergies. Frank Hubbell of SOLO recommends a trial course of the drug before going to a remote location where a severe allergic reaction could prove difficult to treat.

Frequently Asked Questions !
How difficult is Mera Peak Climb?
Mera Peak is non-technical trekking peak climb in Nepal. Even if it is non-technical peak to climb, but it takes you at the altitude of 6476m from sea level and you will be camping over 5000m for two days (Base camp at 5350m and High Camp at 5800m) so these days are tough due to high altitude conditions. The final summit approach to Mera summit is above 40-45-degree slope climbing so it is demanding climb.
Mera Peak Vs Island Peak, which is a difficult climb?
Mera Peak is highest trekking peaks to climb in Nepal, but it is technical easier then Island Peak climb. Island Peak is technical due to its slope of climb and ice and glacier climbing, but Mera Peak is straightforward climb. Altitude wise, Mera Peak (6476m) is higher and Island Peak (6189m) is at low altitudes then Mera Peak but Island Peak has more slope and ridge climbing (45-50-degree slope) section so it makes difficult at climbing.
What happens if I get sick during this trek/ climb?
We always take you slow and steady for this climb and ensure that you all are safe while going to this ascend. But despite the all the safety preparation, if you still get sick, we first provide you high altitude medicine, monitor your health condition, and if it still gets worse, we then take you down to the lower valley for your safety. One of our assistant climbing guide will follow you at this case. If required, we will also use Oxygen for your safety at descending time. If you are in a group departure, rest of your climbing group will continue the climb with lead climbing guide as per the climb itinerary so it will not impact to their itinerary scheduled. If you could not recover from the altitude, then the only safest option is to fly out from mountain to Kathmandu by helicopter rescue, so you must have travel insurance coverage for this climb. At your return to Kathmandu, we take you to the hospital for your further treatment, and Four Seasons Trek will personally care you at this stage.

Does weather affect to our climb in Mera Peak? What happens if flight to Lukla get delayed/ cancelled?
Weather in a mountain are changing every time so it is hard to predict the weather condition in the mountain region. These days, we have different weather forecast apps/ sites and they provide basic information about the weather change which is hardly 50-60 percent accurate. A lot of times, weather could delay our summit climb, thus we have kept extra day for adverse weather condition. Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and return is trans Himalayan flight and it is always depended with clear weather condition so if the flight is delayed or cancelled, your flight will be rescheduled for the next day. But as on option, you could also pay extra money (US$- 350 to US$-500 per person extra) to ride in helicopter to fly to Lukla and we will organize helicopter flight upon your request. Helicopter can land in low visibility so even if the Lukla weather is bad for plane to fly, but Helicopter could easily fly in/ out.
How can I communicate with my family in emergency during this climb?
These days, local cell phones (Namaste- NTC & Ncell) have good reception for this climb so you could buy local SIM card, buy internet package and take it with you to this climb. In addition, your climbing guide will also have local cell phone for back up use. We also take satellite phone with us for emergency use during our climb so you could use it to get in touch with your family if it is emergency.
How about tipping? Who we tip?
Tipping is cultural practice in Nepal over the very long years. For your Mera trip, you will have local Sherpa Guide, assistant guide, high altitude porter to tip. You should tip them at the end of the climb, once return back to Lukla. In Kathmandu, you will have driver and local city tour guide to tip. In general practice of tipping is about 8 to 10 percent of your climb package cost, which is divided for all the stuff as tipping. Ultimately, tipping is your personal appreciation for the great support and services you get from our team, and you could do your own judgement while tipping to the staff.
